Wine Visitor & Education Centre
The newest edition to the Niagara College Teaching Winery is the Wine Visitor & Education Centre, located among the vines in Niagara-on-the-Lake. The circular plan of the retail space gives the structure a comfortable presence within this rural community, while offering panoramic views of the surrounding vineyards and escarpment.
- Highly creative design differing in character to surrounding wineries
- Dividing wall is symbolic of the land, and the escarpment as a dividing force in particular
- Behind the wall sits a highly platonic force; the circular building is more harmonious with the landscape, being a less vigorous form
- Stone wall is a throw-back to the surrounding area - stones echoing natural materials related to the terroir of the region
- Although not LEED-certified, this structure incorporates high-performance glass, overhead sun-shade control, an earth-sheltered crush pad, as well as high-efficiency lighting and HVAC systems
