Completed in 1995, this flagship facility was the first of its kind in the Peninsula to serve the dual purpose of fire and ambulance station. Funded by the Ministry of Health, the ambulance program component creatively fit into the overall concept. The facility boasts a 7000 sf apparatus floor equipped for emergency response vehicle storage, underfloor / apron slab heating systems which will prolong vehicle life. A large community centre hall complete with commercial kitchen facilities, shared program spaces such as change rooms, board room and medical equipment storage room and staff lounge, helped to accommodate both station’s staff needs while avoiding space program duplications. In all this building is very efficient from a functional stand point and very economical to operate. The City of Thorold’s chief building official often boasts that this is one of the largest facilities in Thorold with the smallest operating costs. The building appearance, while using very traditional materials such as smooth red brick, maintains a very dynamic character through the use of overlapping plains of brick colour patterns and lines.
