Lakeview Cemetery Mausoleum Project Moves Forward with Council Approval
July 11, 2025
We are pleased to share that the next phase of the Lakeview Cemetery New Mausoleum has officially received City of Thorold Council approval and has been awarded for construction. Despite a budget increase due to essential upgrades, such as widened emergency access roads and site servicing improvements, Council recognized the long-term value of proceeding with this important community project.
From the outset, our architectural vision has been to create a serene, modern, and cohesive expansion that honours the existing cemetery context while responding to today’s interment needs. The new mausoleum addition is designed with large expanses of glass that welcome natural light into the interior, softening the space and fostering a peaceful environment for remembrance. The structure’s clean, contemporary form is intentionally respectful, with durable materials and refined detailing chosen for their lasting character and timelessness.
A defining feature of the design is the landscaped central courtyard, which plays a crucial role in unifying the new and existing mausoleums. The courtyard creates a shared reflection space that physically and visually links the buildings, offering a calm transition between the old and the new. It also serves as a place of quiet contemplation, framed by architectural elements and natural landscaping that guide movement, frame views, and enhance the spiritual character of the site.
Taking full advantage of the site’s natural topography, a series of stepped columbarium walls are carefully integrated into the sloped landscape. These walls not only provide additional interment options but also help the new addition feel embedded within the terrain, reinforcing a sense of permanence and connection to the land.
As the project moves into the construction phase, we are proud to continue our collaboration with the City of Thorold to deliver a meaningful, dignified, and forward-looking space that will serve the community for generations to come.
